Our Story

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is best known for operating the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world, but we do much more than this...

Through our newest community outreach project we have established a community farm focused on natural botanical products, sustainably grown and ethically produced.

Our farm sits on the border of Tsavo East National Park, which is home to not only Kenya’s single largest population of elephants, but to the history and core operations of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Over the years, this wild and indigenous patch of land has become a branch of the Trust's Kaluku Field Headquarters. While the farm is home to a patchwork of projects, from a carpentry workshop to a 38-beehive apiary, it is best known as our little hub for sustainable agriculture.

Tsavo Farm’s tree nursery grows a variety of indigenous tree species, yielding over 30,000 seedlings to be planted each year in areas requiring reforestation, whilst we compost all of our used branches, hay, and manure from the orphaned elephant projects in Kaluku to grow organic fruit and vegetables for our staff.

We are experimenting with a range of beautiful botanical ideas from lavender oil and wild honey, to our 100% natural real flower confetti, which is made from the finest selection of bougainvillea flower petals, harvested by hand and gently air dried. Nurturing these drought-tolerant plants is entirely sustainable. They don’t require pesticides, chemicals, or fertilisers; in fact, all they need is sunshine, air, and two rainy seasons to ensure two bountiful blooms each year. Our free-ranging goats, which we use for milk, roam as they wish by day and create all the natural fertiliser the bougainvillea need.

Because successful conservation and community engagement go hand in hand, our community projects continue to evolve to further our wildlife conservation work whilst actively identifying the greatest needs of the marginalised communities we work beside, and how best we can support them.

It is from this mission that our farm was born. Generating equal and secure employment opportunities together with a sustainable income from which all profits are channeled back into conserving wild habitats, protecting wildlife, and supporting communities.

Our packaged range of petals is available in six stunning colours

We have a 2-gram gift-size box, equivalent to one generous handful of petals, and a 100-gram box, equivalent to 50 generous handfuls.
